Round ceiling diffusers come in 6", 8", 10", and 12" necks, while lay-in diffusers use a 24" x 24" panel for a 2x2 grid plus a neck size. Vent sizes list the width first on wall and ceiling covers, where orientation is fixed, so a 12" x 6" and a 6" x 12" are two different products. Floor registers are the exception, since they drop into a flat opening and rotate to fit, so their two numbers are interchangeable and the size is written shorter side first.
