Sizing & fit
Measure the duct opening, which is the hole in the wall, ceiling or floor, not your old faceplate. Our sizes name that opening, and the faceplate is larger so it overlaps the edges, on most products by about 1-3/4 inches in each direction. Step by step with diagrams: How to measure.
Order by the duct opening for nearly every product. Sizes are written width by height as they appear on the product page, so 12x6 is 12 inches wide and 6 inches high. Floor registers and toe kick vents follow the industry convention of listing the short side first, so 4x10 is 4 inches across and 10 inches long.
The outer dimensions are listed on every product page so you can check clearances against trim, cabinets or furniture. Two families are sold by their outer size instead: corner baseboard registers and wooden baseboard registers.
Go down to the next available size. The faceplate overlaps the opening, so a slightly smaller duct size still covers the hole. If you are unsure, send us your measurements and we will confirm before you order.
Order by neck size, which is the diameter of the round duct behind the ceiling. A 6 inch diffuser fits a 6 inch duct. The faceplate is wider than the neck, and its outer diameter is listed on the product page.
It is the nominal filter size, which matches the duct opening. A 20x20 return air filter grille holds a standard 20x20x1 filter you can buy anywhere. A filter's actual size is about 1/2 inch smaller than its nominal size, which is normal and still fits.
Products marked Filter included ship with a filter in the box. Filter-ready means the grille holds a filter you supply.
Yes. We stock hundreds of sizes across dozens of product groups, including hard-to-source dimensions many suppliers do not carry. If your opening falls between standard sizes or exceeds them, we can supply a custom size built to your exact opening; send us the precise opening measurement. For custom production at volume, orders of 500+ units typically qualify.
Products & installation
The main difference is the damper. A register has an adjustable damper behind the face so you can control airflow room by room. A grille has fixed or adjustable blades but no damper. A diffuser, usually ceiling mounted and round, square or linear, spreads air across a wider area. All three mount to a duct opening you measure the same way. Full explanation: Grille vs register vs diffuser.
Hold a tissue near the opening while the system runs. If it blows away, that is a supply and you need a supply register. If it sticks to the vent, that is a return and you need a return grille or a filter grille. Return openings are usually larger and have no damper. See Return air grilles: types, sizing and uses.
Steel is the standard choice for dry indoor rooms. It is rigid, takes paint well and costs less, and our steel covers are powder coated to resist dents and corrosion in normal indoor use. Aluminum does not rust, so it is the safer pick for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements and coastal homes. We also carry wood registers for hardwood floors and design-focused rooms. Every product page lists the material and finish.
Yes. Clean the surface, scuff it lightly, use a primer made for metal and apply light coats of spray paint. Keep paint off the damper mechanism and out of the louver pivots so the blades keep moving freely.
Mounting screws are included. Models with a damper arrive assembled and ready to install. Most vent covers only need a screwdriver, and an opening that is already cut does not need any modification.
Check the drop-in depth as well as the opening size. The frame has to sit down into the floor opening and finish flush, so the listed depth needs to match your floor and subfloor thickness. Both the opening dimensions and the depth are on the product page. If you are unsure, email help@airgrilles.com with your floor thickness and opening size and we will confirm the fit.
Orders & pricing
Yes, bulk and wholesale ordering is a core part of what we do. Every product page shows tiered pricing that applies automatically as the quantity goes up, so the discount appears in your cart without a code. We supply contractors, builders, remodelers and property managers by the case, pallet or container.
Yes. Use the Get Quote button on any product or category page, or email help@airgrilles.com with your ZIP code and the sizes and quantities you need. We will send project pricing and a freight quote.
Yes. If you are not sure which grille, register or diffuser you need, or how to measure your opening, email help@airgrilles.com or call (571) 596-7373, available 24/7. Getting the size right the first time avoids returns and reorders, and How to measure is a good starting point.
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay, PayPal and Shop Pay through our secure checkout.
Our standing offer is free standard shipping on qualifying orders of $250 or more, before taxes and after discounts, within the 48 contiguous U.S. and Washington, D.C. It applies automatically at checkout, no code needed. For larger orders we offer volume based bulk pricing. Any limited time promotion is shown on the site while it is running.
Shipping & delivery
We ship from our own company managed warehouses in Gainesville, Virginia, with select orders fulfilled from partner warehouses across the U.S. Most in-stock orders ship the same business day: orders placed before 11:00 AM ET on a business day ship that day, and orders placed after that, on weekends or on U.S. holidays ship the next business day.
We ship via FedEx, UPS and USPS within the 48 contiguous U.S. and Washington, D.C. Standard ground delivery takes about 2 to 5 business days after dispatch, depending on destination. We may select or substitute an equivalent carrier at no extra cost, so the carrier shown at checkout is an estimate. Transit times come from the carrier and are not guaranteed. Full details: shipping policy.
Yes. Free standard shipping on qualifying orders of $250 or more, before taxes and after discounts, within the 48 contiguous U.S. and Washington, D.C. It applies automatically at checkout. The offer covers standard catalog items only; T-Bar drop ceiling diffusers and other oversized items are excluded and ship at calculated carrier rates.
We do not offer an expedited service at checkout. All orders ship standard ground, which is about 2 to 5 business days after dispatch. What makes most orders fast is our cutoff: in-stock orders placed before 11:00 AM ET on a business day ship the same day. If you have a firm deadline, email help@airgrilles.com with your ZIP code and the date and we will tell you what is realistic before you order.
T-Bar drop ceiling diffusers and other oversized products need specialized packaging and freight handling, so their rates are calculated in real time at checkout and they are excluded from the $250 free shipping offer.
If your cart mixes standard and oversized items, shipping is calculated separately for each group. The standard portion can still ship free while carrier rates apply to the oversized items, and the two may ship from different locations and arrive on different days.
No. We currently ship only within the 48 contiguous United States and Washington, D.C. We do not ship to Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, P.O. boxes, or APO/FPO military addresses.
Once your order ships we email a tracking number, and you can see every order and its tracking in your account. If you have not received tracking within 3 business days of your order confirmation, email help@airgrilles.com.
Multi-item orders can ship in separate packages and arrive on different days. Each shipment sends its own tracking email, and that email also lists the items that have not shipped yet.
Returns & cancellations
We have a 30 day return policy, so you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return. Items must come back unused and in their original packaging, and returns need prior authorization.
To start: go to your account, enter your email, sign in with the 6 digit code we email you, open your order and click Request return. Once approved we email a prepaid return label and instructions. Return shipping is deducted from your refund unless the return is due to our error. Full terms: refund and return policy.
If the item comes back unused and in its original packaging you get a full product price refund with no restocking fee. If the package has been opened, a 20% restocking fee applies. Refunds cover the product price only; original shipping is non-refundable unless the error was ours. Approved returns are refunded within 5 business days of inspection, and your bank may take longer to post it.
Two categories are non-returnable: disposable filters, which are final sale, and custom or special order items that have entered production. Custom and special order items are clearly noted on the product page before you buy.
Please inspect your order on delivery and let us know within 7 days. Open your order in your account and use Report a problem, attaching photos of both the product and the packaging, or reply to your shipping confirmation email. We will review and send a replacement as soon as possible.
The fastest route is to request a return from your account for the item you have and place a separate order for the one you need. We do not offer free exchanges unless the error was ours. Before you reorder, check How to measure or send us the opening measurements and we will confirm the size for you.
We ship quickly, so the cancellation window is short. Go to your account, open your order and click Request cancellation, or submit a change request for an address, size or quantity before the order ships. For urgent cancellations call (571) 596-7373, available 24/7. Because in-stock orders placed before 11:00 AM ET ship the same business day, send your request as early as you can. Once an order is packed or handed to the carrier it can no longer be canceled. Details: cancellation policy.
